Here's one of those no redeeming value posts. You have been warned.
I got my temporary crown today. I got there early, as no one should be late for their first crown. I was very excited, even though I figured it would be pretty uneventful. That's when the dental assistant called me back to room and she said,
"...This is my first day at the office."
She assured me she'd be working with the dentist. Uh, YEAH you will!
I assured her she'd do great. After all, you gotta start somewhere. Besides, better to have a positive outlook than go running down the street while wearing a paper bib.
When the dentist entered, I had only question: "What if they lock things down again? Will I be stuck with a temporary crown?"
Most people probably ask, "will it hurt?" "How long will this take?" I'm not worried about those things. I'm worried about getting my gold crown without interference from a lock down. I found it to be a reasonable question, considering all the unsafe holiday behavior that probably occurred. The dentist assured me I'd still get my permanent crown without issue and as scheduled.
Then, let's get this show on the road!
Everything was fine. She did fine. The dentist did indeed talk her through everything. I, in turn, got to learn all about crowns, albeit a temporary crown in this case. The only thing that was sad? I couldn't see what they were doing.
It's not like they had a spare mirror for me to hold above their busy hands.
One weird did happen. For part of the procedure, I couldn't shut my left eye. Well, I could kinda-sorta blink if I blinked both eyes at the same time, but to fully shut the left eye or wink with only the left eye-impossible. At one point, I actually shut it using my hand. I might not have noticed except my eye felt really dry. I assume the problem was the Novocain as it was on the same side at the dental work. I hope the dentist and assistant didn't think me too much of a freak while I blinked and squinted. (FTR, I only used my hand to close the eye while they were out of the room but I admit to a lot of weird blinking during the procedure.) The issue resolved itself quickly but only after some wild winking and time for the Novocain to dissipate.
Can't you just imagine it? After I leave the office...
Dentist: Did you notice her...
Assistant: Weird winking and blinking?
Dentist: Yes! Was she winking at you?
Assistant: I think she was winking at YOU.
Dentist: Maybe she was winking in support of you.
Assistant: I dunno. What a freak.
Dentist: Blinking, winking freak. But, what a great looking temporary crown she has!
I took a gander when I got in the car. It's pretty amazing how a fake tooth can look like a real tooth. I wonder if they'll let me keep it once it's time is over? Probably not. Can't hurt to ask....
I don't want to get too attached to it, seeing as it will be gone within a few short weeks. I'll be nice to it but not get attached. I'll avoid gum and caramels in support of its success... at long as it stays attached to ME and I can eat my daily ice cream, life will be grand.
So, here I sit, temporary crown security in place... the first day in the office behind the assistant... the gold crown on its way to becoming reality.
It's the holidays.
The Christmas songs have begun.
Some people are singing about wanting two front teeth.
All I want for Christmas is my shiny new crown.
You can keep your two front teeth.
